FAQs
Can I request sedation at the dentist?
Absolutely. If you experience dental anxiety, have a strong gag reflex, need extensive work completed in a single visit, or simply want a more comfortable experience, you can request sedation. Many patients are not aware that sedation is an option for routine and complex procedures alike.
At Palani Center for Dental Implants, we encourage patients to discuss their comfort preferences during the consultation so we can recommend the appropriate level of sedation for their needs. Whether you need mild relaxation to take the edge off or deeper sedation for a longer surgical procedure, our team is experienced in tailoring sedation to each individual.
You do not need to have a diagnosed anxiety disorder or phobia to benefit from sedation — wanting to feel more relaxed and comfortable during your dental visit is reason enough.
Will insurance cover sedation dentistry?
Insurance coverage for sedation dentistry varies significantly depending on your provider, your specific plan, and the reason sedation is being used. In general, sedation that is considered medically necessary — such as for patients with certain medical conditions, severe anxiety disorders, or disabilities that make it difficult to receive treatment otherwise — is more likely to receive some level of coverage.
Sedation used purely for comfort during elective procedures may not be covered. Some plans may cover certain types of sedation, such as nitrous oxide, while excluding others, such as IV sedation. We recommend contacting your insurance provider directly to ask about your plan’s sedation benefits.
Our team at Palani Center for Dental Implants is also happy to help you understand your options and can assist with pre-authorization requests when applicable.
Is sedation dentistry worth it?
For many patients, sedation dentistry is absolutely worth it. Dental anxiety is one of the most common reasons people delay or avoid dental care entirely, and that avoidance can lead to worsening oral health problems that ultimately require more extensive and invasive treatment. Sedation helps break that cycle by allowing anxious patients to receive the care they need in a calm, stress-free environment. Beyond anxiety, sedation is also valuable for patients undergoing lengthy procedures such as full mouth implant placement, because it allows the dental team to work efficiently while you remain comfortable throughout.
Many patients report that sedation made their experience so positive that they no longer dread dental visits. If fear or discomfort has been keeping you from the care you need, sedation dentistry at Palani Center for Dental Implants may be the key to getting your oral health back on track.
Are you completely asleep during sedation dentistry?
It depends on the type of sedation used. There are several levels of sedation available in dentistry. Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, provides mild relaxation while you remain fully awake and aware.
Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed medication before your appointment that produces a deeper state of relaxation, and while you will remain conscious, you may feel drowsy and may not remember much of the procedure afterward.
IV sedation delivers medication directly into the bloodstream for a deeper level of sedation, and many patients feel as though they slept through the entire appointment even though they were not fully unconscious. General anesthesia, which renders you completely unconscious, is typically reserved for the most complex surgical cases.
At Palani Center for Dental Implants, we will discuss all available sedation options with you and recommend the level that best suits your procedure and comfort needs.
